Acidify / avoid high pH materials
It has been shown that there is a correlation between pH and the degree of severity of Fusarium Patch disease outbreaks, in that the higher the surface pH the more severe attacks of Fusarium Patch are. Fertilisers containing ammonium sulphate are known to help acidify fine turf surfaces and therefore reduce the incidence of Fusarium Patch. It is however important that they are used at the correct time and that Black Layer is not a problem.
Alkaline top dressings/bunker sands should also be avoided.
Alkaline pH levels will also affect plant health due to the lock up/unavailability of many nutrients.
